There are a number of medications available today, but our favorites are terbinafine and itraconazole, which work by preventing the fungus from building the “walls” of the cell. Your doctor will choose the best one for you, based on your specific needs and preferences.
Terbinafine is a daily pill. When treating the fingernails, you take terbinafine once daily for up to six weeks, and 12 weeks for toenail infections.
Itraconazole is a pill taken twice daily for 1 week per month. For fingernails you continue this treatment for 2 months whereas for toenails it is done for 3 months.
Oral medication often require laboratory testing. With Caratin Rx, these are always free.
